What is IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)?
IBS (sometimes called Irritated Bowel Syndrome) is becoming one of the most common digestive problems and it is now thought to affect about 20% of the population at any one time. It affects more women than men. The IBS symptoms can stop people leading full and meaningful lives as they are often too afraid to go on outings in case they are too far from a toilet - what a miserable way to live!
Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms can include:
Bloating after eating
Diarrhoea
Constipation
Stomach cramps and/or pain
Nervous stomach
Embarrassing stomach noises and gurgling
Bowel movements that are erratic
Nausea and vomiting
Flatulence (passing excess wind)
Indigestion / gurgling stomach
Hypnosis is now recognised by the medical profession as a valuable IBS treatment. The medical profession have found that successful treatment of IBS is notoriously difficult and now believe it to be an anxiety based disorder. The most baffling thing about IBS (also known as spastic colon or colitis) is that there are no physical signs of this disorder so it can't be diagnosed with scans, x-rays or blood tests.
Other therapies including counselling, clinical hypnotherapy and CBT only ever deal with the IBS symptoms and the cause of it remains unresolved. You have probably been told that you will have to 'cope' with these symptoms and there is no IBS cure.
Irritable bowel symptoms nearly always get worse when you're under stress, feeling anxious or overwhelmed. This, of course, would suggest that treating your emotional, nervous or psychological issues will be enormously effective in reducing or completely eliminating your current IBS symptoms.
